We were contacted by Castleford Academy who wanted us to create a walkway canopy that would link up three doors on different building blocks at the school.
The requirement
The school needed a canopy that would provide a covered outdoor walkway linking three different doorways. As there is no internal route between the different school blocks, the current set up meant that students had to walk up to 60m outside to move between buildings. This meant that during rainy weather, students were getting wet when changing lessons.
The school wanted to remove this issue and keep students dry during changeover. The canopy would also provide students with some covered outside space they could utilise during break times.
The challenge
The route of the walkway was split over two different levels and included two corners. The canopy system needed to be versatile and fit seamlessly into the space required.
There was also a disabled ramp and a staircase in the intended location. That meant that supporting posts would have to be carefully positioned to prevent obstructions.
The solution
The challenge of the different levels and corners was easy to overcome thanks to the versatility of the Connekt system. We attended the site to carry out a survey and came up with a design that would achieve the desired results.
Several variants were needed due to the make-up of the building. Vertical brackets, posts and two separate round the corner systems were all used on the project to accommodate the two changes in direction. The ability to cantilever the canopy system meant we could ensure there were absolutely no obstructions to the disabled ramp and staircase.
Results
The project was finished on time and to the specifications of Castleford Academy. The covered walkway means that students at the school can stay dry as they move between the different buildings. They can also enjoy additional sheltered outside space during break times.
