Background
The Sandon School had an outdoor space that wasn’t being used to its full potential. The school wanted to maximise the area by creating a new, covered space that could serve multiple purposes. Primarily, it would be an outdoor dining area for students during lunch and break times.
The requirement
The objective was to utilise the underused outdoor space by installing a canopy that would create a sheltered area. This new space would accommodate benches, providing students with a comfortable place to eat lunch and spend time during breaks, no matter the weather.
The challenge
The project presented several challenges.
- The area was an awkward shape with overhanging trees at the edge of the proposed canopy site.
- The size of the canopy needed to be carefully considered to fit the space while avoiding the fence and trees.
- The existing drainage runs on the site needed to be taken into account to make sure the canopy posts and foundations didn’t interfere.
- The area fell under the boundary of Cadent Gas Network Assets, requiring cautious excavation.
The solution
We proposed our Connekt Colosseum canopy as the ideal solution for The Sandon School. The freestanding canopy covers a large outdoor space with posts positioned towards the outer edges and no obstructions in the middle of the area. This makes it perfect for placing benches underneath.
The specific dimensions of the canopy were 15000mm x 6200mm, chosen to fit the available space while avoiding obstacles. If needed, the canopy can be extended in length at a later date if more space is required.
Results
The installation of the Connekt Colosseum canopy was completed during the summer holidays, on time and as scheduled. The school now has a versatile covered outdoor space that serves multiple purposes:
- It provides a sheltered area for students to eat lunch outdoors.
- The space can be used during break times, offering protection from the elements.
- The canopy transforms a previously underutilised area into a functional, year-round space.
- The solution is maintenance-free and long-lasting, meeting the school’s need for a budget-friendly option that’s in keeping with the school’s aesthetics.
The school was very pleased with the canopy and the service provided from start to finish. They particularly praised Stephen Wruk, the surveyor, for being friendly, helpful and informative. The installation was completed in a professional and timely manner, leaving the school satisfied with the entire process.
